Taking its influences from scientific illustration Matthews' paintings radiate light and symmetry. His profound love and respect for the science of Entomology has inspired him to create a variety of different series of paintings; 'Native Butterflies', 'Coctalis Lepidoptera', 'Black Hoards', 'Collective Nouns', 'The comparison of micro-evolutionary details', 'Colourcard Butterflies' and some lino block carvings and prints entitled 'Linoptera'.

Matthews series of paintings and lino block carvings titled 'Snake track' however change the subject matter somewhat as he explores childhood memories relating to a particular path running through the Forest of Dean in Herefordshire. Here, time spent collecting butterflies and blackberries is overcast by an unspoken fear of the adders which he presumes live on the Snake Track.
